Estimated vs Actual: Catching an Overcharged Utility Bill

When you miss a reading, providers bill an estimate that can be too high. Log your actual meter reading in FinMan, let it compute the real difference and bill, and compare it against the provider's estimated amount to reclaim the overcharge next cycle.

Where estimated bills come from

If you don't submit a reading one month, your utility doesn't stop billing — it guesses. Providers estimate your usage from past averages, and that guess is often rounded up. The next time you submit a real reading, they reconcile the difference, but the back-and-forth hides whether you actually overpaid.

The fix: keep your own ground truth

The only way to catch an inflated estimate is to have your own record of what the meter actually showed. In FinMan, each service under an address stores a history of readings, and every new reading computes the difference against the previous one automatically — so you always know your real consumption, independent of what the provider charged.

  • Log a reading every cycle, even the months you forget to submit to the provider.
  • Send a meter photo to the bot — AI reads the value and matches it to the right address, service and tariff, so you don't even type the number.
  • FinMan multiplies the difference by your tariff to show the real bill for that period.

Comparing estimate vs actual

When the provider's bill arrives, put both numbers side by side:

  1. Your computed bill from the FinMan reading difference.
  2. The amount the provider actually charged (log it as the real expense).

If the provider's figure is higher and you were billed an estimate, you've found the overcharge. On the next real reading the provider usually credits it back — but now you can verify that the correction actually happened instead of trusting it blindly.

Readings without gaps are your best defense. One missed month lets an estimate slip in; a continuous history makes every discrepancy obvious.

Let the provider cabinet close the loop

For supported providers, FinMan can submit your confirmed reading to the provider's online cabinet directly (every submission needs your explicit OK), and for flat-fee services it pulls the amount billed for the month. That means fewer missed submissions — the root cause of estimated bills — and the billed amount lands next to your own reading automatically.

Where your provider isn't supported, FinMan still logs the reading and computes the difference; you submit manually, but your records stay complete.

The habit that pays

Set a monthly reminder to send one meter photo per service. It takes seconds, it keeps your consumption history unbroken, and it turns a vague "that bill seems high" into a number you can actually challenge.
